![]() cbi alleged that pta was proposed to be brought under limited permissible items instead of open general licence with effect from may 29, 1985, but two days prior to this, some government officials divulged secret information to ril which in turn established letters of credit to import 80,000 mts of pta and managed to import 50,000 mts of the product under ogl. cbi had filed an fir on novemalleging that certain officials of ministries of commerce and finance and controller of exports and imports abused their position as public servants to cause pecuniary advantage to ril in the matter of import of pta. in one case two foreign banks were involved and in the other canara bank and state bank of india. cbi filed chargesheets against dhirubhai and some others on january 5, 1996, alleging that ril and other accused had forged letters of credit in connivance with bank officials. cbi, on the other hand, pleaded the chargesheets had been accepted by the court and the accused had not challenged the process issued by the magistrate in a higher court. ![]() they also could not produce witnesses to implicate dhirubhai in the alleged conspiracy. his counsel amit desai argued that cbi had no material to show dhirubhai's involvement. the cbi allegation that nothing would have transpired without his knowledge was baseless, dhirubhai argued. dhirubhai pleaded that the only accusation against him was that he was the chairman and managing director of the company when the alleged offence was committed. he could not claim ignorance of decisions taken by his company and should be held responsible. cbi counsel, i d vaid, opposing discharge plea of the accused, said dhirubhai was at the relevant time managing director of the company and hence in that capacity he was a permanent director. ambani was discharged by additional chief metropolitan magistrate v p taware, who felt that there was no direct evidence to implicate him in the cases. Mumbai: chief of reliance industries ltd dhirubhai ambani was on monday discharged in two cases filed by cbi against him and others for allegedly cheating the union government of crores of rupees through import of purified terepthalic acid by flouting rules.
